Tips to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Winter

Josh at Lincoln Repair wants all drivers to be safe while in the vehicle this winter. Here are some tips to ensure your safety:

  • Have a trusted mechanic check the tire pressure on all tires. When cold temperatures inflate, tire pressure deflates.
  • Have the tread depth checked. The better the tread, the better the tire will grip in the snow.
  • Make sure your vehicle has plenty of coolant, or antifreeze. A lack of coolant could freeze up your engine.
  • Ensure that all lights are working. If you're driving at night, or if you get stranded at night, good lighting is crucial for safe driving and to be found.
  • Have the battery tested. You don't want to be out in freezing temperatures and have the battery fail on you.
  • Check for any developing leaks. Cold weather tends to make small leaks become much bigger.

Have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle at all times during the winter. Items should include, but are not limited to:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flat tire repair kit
  • Spare tire
  • Emergency Signals (flares, flags, warning triangles, etc)
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Extra dry clothing
  • Blanket / sleeping bag
